Amap (高德地图, “Gaode Map”) is Alibaba’s leading navigation app, with over a billion users and centimeter-level map accuracy in China. Amap’s coverage spans 200+ countries (maps and directions worldwide) but is most detailed in China. Its interface is generally cleaner and more intuitive than competitors (e.g. Baidu Map). Using Amap (Step-by-Step)

1. Installation: Download “Amap (Gaode)” from your device’s app store. The official Amap Global app (with some English support) is available on iOS and Google Play. (If you’re already in China, Amap may come pre-installed on many Android phones.) Update to the latest version.

2. Switch to English (optional): In the app, open Settings (设置) → General (通用) → Language (语言) and select English. If “English” is grayed out, force-close the app and reopen it to activate the option. Now much of the menu will display in English, though some features and POI names may remain in Chinese.

3. Account: You can use Amap without an account for basic navigation. (Registering/logging in requires a Chinese phone number and is only needed for certain services like ride-hailing or adding contacts.)
