Amap (高德地图, “Gaode Map”) is Alibaba’s leading navigation app, with over a billion users and centimeter-level map accuracy in China. It provides multi-modal route planning (driving, public transit, cycling, walking, truck, motorcycle, etc.) and supports both online and offline use. Amap’s coverage spans 200+ countries (maps and directions worldwide) but is most detailed in China. Its interface is generally cleaner and more intuitive than competitors (e.g. Baidu Map). Key features include real-time traffic updates, voice guidance, AR navigation, and rich POI search.

-
Multi-Mode Navigation: Plan routes by car, bike, walk, bus/subway, taxi or ride-hail, truck, motorcycle, etc. tap the “路线 (Route)” button and enter your destination (English place names work as well as Chinese). Then select the desired mode (e.g. car, bus/metro, bicycle, walking).
-
Live Traffic & Alerts: Amap shows live traffic conditions on colored roads (red for congestion) and reroutes around jams. It integrates official traffic data for instant congestion updates and even predicts delays, helping drivers save time. Voice guidance (with optional celebrity voices) provides turn-by-turn directions. Driving mode includes lane-level guidance and countdown timers on traffic lights, while detailed junction views help avoid missing turns.
-
AR Navigation: Amap pioneered augmented-reality navigation in China. In driving mode, its AR feature recognizes cars, pedestrians, lane lines and traffic lights, giving collision and signal warnings. For walking, Amap v10.76+ lets you raise your phone to activate AR mode: live camera view shows 3D arrows on the real streets (overlay of “直行/转弯” cues), alongside a small 2D map.
-
Public Transit Guidance: Amap provides robust transit planning. It includes real-time bus and metro schedules, step-by-step transfer walking directions, and even indicates which bus/metro car or exit to take. For example, it shows bus arrival countdowns and highlights the precise subway exit that brings you closest to your destination. (However, note that detailed transit features require data connectivity.)
-
Offline Maps & Storage: Users can download city maps for offline use (ideal in weak-signal areas). Offline mode supports walking, driving and cycling navigation with pre-downloaded map data.
-
Favorites & Extras: You can save frequent destinations (“Home”, “Work”) to Favorites (收藏) for one-tap routing. Amap also integrates other services: in-app ride-hailing/taxi booking (with price estimates), 3D landmark models (e.g. towers and tourist sites in 360° view), and even a “Wonder” (奇境) mode that shows scenic locations under different lighting/season conditions. (It does not offer Google-style Street View.)
User Reviews & Feedback
User feedback on Amap is mixed, often depending on user background. Chinese users generally rate Amap highly for accuracy and features, but foreign users frequently encounter issues. In English-language reviews (Google Play, tech forums), common complaints include the predominantly Chinese interface, mandatory phone-number registration, and occasional routing errors. For example, one user noted the app “insists on me adding my phone number to use anything beyond basic functions… list of countries it will accept is super limited”. Another found it “terribly unreliable” routes were wrong (arrow mis-pointing) and transit suggestions faulty (wrong bus routes, absurd detours). Users also gripe that offline mode on the Play Store version often fails when actually abroad or without signal.
On the positive side, some praise Amap’s functionality in China once set up properly. Reddit contributors observed that a recent update re-enabled English support on Android: “the app’s functions have been greatly simplified, but finally there’s a reliable Android English map app”. (Instructions: force-close and reopen the app after updating to activate the English language option.) In domestic app stores, reviews highlight Amap’s speed and traffic accuracy; nevertheless, even there users report occasional GPS glitches after updates. Overall, Amap’s Google Play rating is around 3–4 stars (for the global “Amap Global” app), reflecting its utility in China but also the learning curve for non-Chinese users.
Comparison with Google, Apple & Baidu Maps
-
Data & Coverage: Amap and Baidu Maps dominate within China; both have highly detailed, updated local data. Amap claims “National Class-A” certification with centimeter-level precision, and regularly updates maps (roads, POIs). Baidu similarly has extensive POIs and services (it even integrated Street View historically). Google Maps and Apple Maps are largely outdated or limited in China: Google’s China data hasn’t been updated due to licensing, so new roads/buildings may be missing or misplaced. Apple Maps (which uses Gaode data within China) works without VPN and generally has accurate city road data, but it lacks the depth of local info (no Chinese place reviews, no detailed subway exits).
-
Features: Amap and Baidu both offer multi-mode routing (driving/bus/walk), real-time traffic, and POI search. Amap provides additional features like AR nav, 3D lane guidance, and extensive speed-camera warnings. Baidu’s strengths are its massive POI database (shops, restaurants, etc.) and comprehensive transit info; many find it excels at local discovery, though its UI is very dense and Chinese-centric. Google/Apple have simpler UIs: Apple Maps gives a clean English experience and works offline, but has no Chinese-transit detail (no exit numbers, no bus schedules). Google Maps provides global features like Street View and offline mode, but in China it’s unreliable (GPS errors and outdated bus info).
-
Accuracy & Speed: In Chinese cities, Amap and Baidu are much more accurate and faster to load local data than Western apps. Amap is often praised for finding alternate routes quickly under heavy traffic. Baidu is also accurate but can feel cluttered. Google and Apple rely on Gaode’s Chinese data (Apple) or obsolete data (Google), so navigation in China is best done with Amap or Baidu.
-
UI/UX & Language: Amap’s interface is relatively modern, but primarily Chinese. It now allows switching some menus to English (via Settings). Baidu is more overloaded with features and also mostly Chinese. Apple Maps offers only English but is limited to iOS. Google Maps is familiar but effectively blocked/outdated in mainland China. Table of comparison:
| App | Languages | Limitations | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amap | Chinese, English | Chinese UI (partial English), some features need Chinese login | |||
| Baidu Map | Chinese | Chinese-only interface; steep learning curve for non-Chinese users | |||
| Google Maps | English (multi) | In China: data outdated, GPS errors, blocked (needs VPN) | |||
| Apple Maps | English | Lacks local features (no traffic detail, no Android) |

Using Amap (Step-by-Step)
-
Installation: Download “Amap (Gaode)” from your device’s app store. The official Amap Global app (with some English support) is available on iOS and Google Play. (If you’re already in China, Amap may come pre-installed on many Android phones.) Update to the latest version.
-
Switch to English (optional): In the app, open Settings (设置) → General (通用) → Language (语言) and select English. If “English” is grayed out, force-close the app and reopen it to activate the option. Now much of the menu will display in English, though some features and POI names may remain in Chinese.
-
Account: You can use Amap without an account for basic navigation. (Registering/logging in requires a Chinese phone number and is only needed for certain services like ride-hailing or adding contacts.)
-
Planning a Route: Tap the blue arrow icon (路线, “Route”) on the main screen. Enter your destination in English or Chinese Amap’s search is robust. The app then shows route options. Choose your travel mode by tapping the appropriate icon: car, taxi (打车), bus (公交/地铁), bicycle, or walking.
-
For driving: After selecting “Car,” pick your preferred route. The app displays real-time traffic (green/yellow/red roads) and ETA. Press “Go” (开始) to start navigation. Amap will give spoken directions and on-screen guidance. You’ll see lane guidance and can zoom into a 3D view of complex intersections.
-
For public transit: Select the bus/subway icon. Amap will suggest bus, metro or taxi combinations, with departure times and transfers. It will display which subway line and exit to take.
-
For walking: Amap will plan foot routes (often including bus legs if needed). Once walking navigation starts, simply lift your phone to switch into AR mode: on-screen arrows will appear on the live camera view to guide you. Otherwise, follow the on-screen walking instructions.
-
-
Advanced Features: During navigation you can tap options for voice guidance, traffic camera alerts, or view 3D city models of landmarks. Use the “+” or layer icon to toggle overlays like real-time traffic or nearby stations. To save a route, tap Favorites (收藏) and add “Home” or “Work” for quick access.
-
Offline Maps: To download maps for offline use, go to “Me (我的)” → “Offline Maps (离线地图)”. Select and download city maps (e.g. Beijing, Shanghai). Amap will use offline data when you have poor signal. Turn on auto-update if you like.
-
Other Services: From the main menu, you can also book taxis (Amap’s ride-hailing) or check “Wonder” (奇境) for scenic AR views. For any questions, use the “Help & Feedback” option in “Me.”
